The galax leaves are harvested from June 15 – April 15 the pickers are required to purchase a permit from the US Forest Service when picking on government property and they have to have written permission to pick on private property. The leaves are mostly harvested for the florist industry. Our harvesting season is restricted form April 15- June 15 to protect and preserve the crop for the future of harvesting. At the beginning of the harvesting season June 15th the galax have a beautiful bright and waxy green color and very tender. These leaves have to have special attention. They have to be held in cold storage until shipped. The picker has to be very experienced in how to pick and handle the galax to keep the product from going bad. Later in the season when the product hardens off after several frost the shelf life is much longer. After several frost the galax will begin to turn a rich leathery burgundy color and can be kept in cold storage for months. The product is harvested in the forest then it is brought to our facility where it is boxed and put in cold storage. Each day we remove the product and hand grade our galax so our quality is at our best before shipping in the US and Internationally! |
